ANCIENT ROOTS - 28 Minutes
In a series of six vignettes, this video gives an overview of how archaeology
is helping the people of Israel to understand their roots. Man-made caves
with 35 chambers that provided shelter for Jews who rebelled against Hadrian
are shown, as well as a 2,000 year old ship from the Sea of Galilee and
a 2,000 year old tomb in the center of a 20th century highway; ruins of
an ancient desert city with a channel to trap water runoff from the hillside;
the search for a Philistine port; ancient silver plates with passages
from the book of Numbers (Bamidbar), and the role of the district archaeologist
in Jerusalem.
A CONVERSATION WITH JAMES MICHENER- 30 Minutes
Mr. Michener, noted author, discusses Judaism and the State of Israel,
particularly as they relate to his best-selling book, The Source, which
traces the history of an archaeological dig site in modern Israel back
to its settlement millennia ago, and recounts the technological and spiritual
development of its inhabitants over the centuries.
A CONVERSATION WITH YIGAEL YADIN - 30 Minutes
Martin Agronsky, NBC commentator, interviews Dr. Yigael Yadin, late Professor
of Archaeology at the Hebrew University and former commander-in-chief
of the Israeli army. Professor Yadin discusses the Dead Sea Scrolls and
his excavations in the Dead Sea area. He points out analogies between
tactical problems faced by the army in ancient and modern Israel.
EXPLORERS OF THE HOLY LAND IN THE 19TH CENTURY - 27 Minutes
In the early 1800’ Israel was a desolate province of the Turkish
Empire ruled by tribal chieftains and marauding gangs, and largely inaccessible
to Western travelers. “Explorers of the Holy Land in the 19th Century”
traces the rediscovery of Israel, from Napoleon’ unsuccessful attempt
to conquer Acre in 1799 to the crowning achievement of Biblical Archeology
in the 19th century, The Palestine Exploration Fund's "Survey of
Western Palestine," published in 1882. Includes discussions of the
American theologian Edward Robinson and his associate Eli Smith, who located
over 1,000 biblical sites in Israel, as well as Henry Baker Tristam and
Charles Wilson's contributions to zoology and to the topographical surveying
of Jerusalem. These explorers served to create the field of Biblical Archaeology
and to open the land up to settlement of what eventually became the modern
State of Israel.
HEBREW SCRIPT- 20 Minutes
A unique video with animation, showing the development of the Hebrew alphabet,
from the ancient motifs with its cuneiform script, to present day scripts.
IN THE PATH OF PRAYER - 24 Minutes
This video shows the ancient synagogues which have been uncovered at Masada,
Qumran, Barom, Kfar Nahum (Capernaum), Koravim, Beth Alfa, Tiberias, Safed
and Jerusalem. These synagogues tell the story of the unbroken Jewish
presence in the country.
JERUSALEM FROM BELOW - 25 Minutes
This is a must see video for archaeology buffs, or for those fascinated
by Israel’ ever living antiquity. It highlights archeological finds
discovered below the homes and ruins of Jerusalem, particularly the finds
made by Theo Siebenberg during digs below his home. Siebenberg and leading
archaeologists comment on their historical meaning. Rabbi Noah Weinberg
of Yeshiva Aish Hatorah speaks of the holiness of Jerusalem, and touches
on the philosophical differences between those trying to find the relics
of the past and those wanting to build the Jerusalem of the future.
MATRIX OF MEANING FOR SACRED ALPHABETS - 120 Minutes ($39.95)
As Robert Jastrow, in his book The Enchanted Loom, so elegantly describes
the birth of human intelligence as emanating from the hand, so in the
shaping of the Hebrew alphabet is the ever-present hand. As neurobiologists
have known for some time, the hand is hardwired into the brain; and it
is from the part of the brain that controls our hands that we derive the
centers that control speech. This fact, and the amazing rediscoveries
of Mr. Tenen, lead one to appreciate why the Hebrew language is also called
the Holy tongue, and why prayer in Hebrew has a power unlike any other
language. It explains why the German philosopher Herder studied 10 years
to learn Hebrew so that he could truly feel the power of the Psalms, and
why the bulk of Sir Isaac Newton’ research was spent on his study
of the Bible and not physics. Finally, Mr. Tenen develops a unique theory
of natural linguistics based on the intrinsic meaning of the Hebrew letters
that shows the pivotal relationship of Hebrew to the various languages
of the world. “A Matrix of Meaning for Sacred Alphabets” forces
the viewer to integrate the disparate knowledge of the Torah, Zohar, mathematics,
physics, and computer modeling into a new appreciation of the power and
meaning of Hebrew. This video places the Hebrew alphabet firmly in our
hands.
SCROLL FROM A SON OF A STAR - 50 Minutes
Based on Yigael Yadin's book Bar kokhba, this video traces the history
of the Jewish exile from Jerusalem by the Roman conquerors in 70 C.E.,
with the destruction of the Temple. In 124 C.E., Bar Kokhba, for ages
more of a myth than a man, led an uprising against the Roman generals,
which was at first successful. The revolt was soon crushed by the Roman
legions, and Bar Kokhba and his followers were forced to flee into the
Judean desert where they were pursued and destroyed. In 1960, Yigael Yadin
led an expedition into the caves of the Judean hills at Em Gedi, to discover
and recreate the history of that period.
SECRETS OF JERUSALEM- 27 Minutes
An explanation of the life and times of the First and Second Temple periods
hidden beneath the soil of centuries. Israel’ leading archaeologists
guide viewers through the tunnels and caves that played a vital role in
Jerusalem’ ancient history and the digs and excavations that verify
biblical accounts.
TRACING MOUNT SINAI - 42 Minutes
